“I am happy to report that in my book, Denham is THE REAL THING.”
-Roger Bourland, composer
[Denham's] ...music is characterized by an elegance of approach, a highly-developed sense of rhythm, a sure sense of structure and a clever, witty style (often invoking and playing with jazz and commercial styles), all of which is obviously informed by a sophisticated knowledge and understanding of music literature.
-Joel Hoffman, Professor of Composition, University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music
Robert Denham writes music “in the American grain,” to use a phrase from the poet William Carlos Williams. Denham’s work is sophisticated “art music,” to be sure, but it frequently summons up—and is sustained by—a populist dimension, invoking jazz, blues, and gospel, among other forms. Like America itself, this music is eclectic—able to tug at your heart but unafraid to ask something of your intelligence. Robert Denham’s music achieves what all great art aspires to—it remains with you, becomes a part of your life, long after the notes have passed into silence.
-Gregory Wolfe, Editor, Image
One of the most gifted composers of his generation, Robert Denham's works are uniquely crafted with a blend of flowing lyricism, vivid colors and a touch of wry humor. Having worked with him personally, I can say without reservation that he is a composer of the highest caliber with an inexhaustible palette of ideas from which to draw. I am honored to know him as a colleague, fine musician and dear friend.
